Jump to Recipe
Level: Easy
Total time: 40min

This Italian tomato sauce never fails the expectations and has been a regular on our table for many years. It is very easy and quick to make and turns a simple meal into a real delight. This really does not take much more time than cooking with a readymade tomato sauce. And it is so worth it!

THE TIPS TO SUCCEED:

1: First of all the tomatoes needs to be qualitative. If you buy the basic, first price tomatoes in a can the risk is that your sauce will be too sour or bitter. If you can find the Italian brand Mutti then I highly recommend their canned tomatoes.

2: You should be careful while cooking the onions. They should be cooked slowly over medium/low heat to soften but not get brown. If they turn brown the taste of your sauce gets more an edge of fried onions to it.

Let’s get started

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp Olive Oil
  • 1 pcs Onion
  • 2 cloves Garlic
  • 800 g Canned peeled tomatoes, whole or chopped
  • 2 tbsp Balsamic Vinegar
  • 1 tbsp Sugar
  • 3-4 tbsp Basil, frozen or fresh
  • Salt and Pepper
  • Parmesan cheese
  • 500 g Linguini

How to do it

Start by chopping your onion. Slowly fry it on medium/low heat for around 15 minutes until it gets really soft

Next, you add the garlic with a garlic press after 10 minutes and continue to fry with the onions for the next 5 minutes.

Then pour in the canned tomatoes. Add the balsamic vinegar, sugar and chopped fresh or frozen basil. Finally, you add salt and pepper.

After that, all you have to do is let it simmer for approx 15 minutes. This is just the time you need to boil the water and cook your pasta. Steer the sauce now and then.

Serving the Italian tomato sauce

You can serve the Italian tomato sauce on top of your linguini pasta (or any other pasta of your choice). Add some grated parmesan cheese, a few leaves of fresh basil and freshly ground pepper.
